High-end Acer tablet with Windows 8 dubbed Bulgari is reportedly in the works

A high-end Windows 8 tablet by Acer, featuring the latest generation Intel Core i3 Haswell is reportedly in the works. Dubbed Bulgari, the upcoming slate is rumored for an official reveal next month.

Along with the latest Intel silicon, the Acer Bulgari is tipped to sport an impressive 11.6″ IPS display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The rest of the rumored specs include 4GB of RAM, 64GB of built-in, expandable storage, and an 8MP camera.
If rumors pan out to be the real deal, the upcoming Acer slate is certain to attract a good deal of attention. We’ll keep a close eye on any further developments on the subject.

Intel’s fourth-gen Intel Core processors promise all day battery life

At the press day before CES 2013 officially kicks off Intel unveiled its fourth-generation Intel Core processor, which will reportedly be able to extend the battery life of latest mobile PCs to 9 hours.

Formerly known as Haswell the new chipset is made with ultrabooks-slash-tablets in mind and could reach 13 hours of battery when docked to a keyboard.
The device in question is codenamed North Cape and is a 10 mm slate with a standalone keyboard with battery.

Intel achieves the extended battery life by reducing the power consumption from 10 watts to 7 watts.
Also the next-gen ultrabooks will not only use touchscreen technology but require it – Intel will make touchscreen and WiDi wireless display technology a must for ultrabooks using Intel Core fourth-generation processors.

Samsung announces Series 7 touchscreen monitor for Windows 8

Samsung has announced the Series 7 SC770 touch monitor, the first of its kind by Samsung. The monitor has been designed with Windows 8 in mind and has a multi-touch display that supports up to 10 touch points at a time.

The monitor also has a adjustable stand that allows you to tilt the display up to 60 degrees, making it easier to use the touchscreen. The 24-inch panel has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 with a viewing angle of 178 degrees.

Other than that Samsung also announced a non-touch monitor – the Series 7 SC750 – which has a 27-inch, FullHD panel. This one does not tilt back like the SC770 but lets you rotate it sideways 90 degrees to be used in portrait mode for viewing documents and such.
Both models are expected to go on sale in the first quarter of 2013 but no prices have been provided so far.

Windows 8 Store now has over 35,000 apps

We already saw how the Windows Phone 8 Store is doing, time to have a look at the Windows 8 store. According to MetroStore Scanner, the store for Microsoft’s new computer OS has over 35,000 apps, over 22,000 of which are available in the UK.



That’s not bad, considering that the Store had only 10,000 apps at the end of October. The growth is accelerating too – in early November the Windows 8 Store on average saw 362 new apps added to its virtual shelves each day. That number is now 415.
So, even if the number of new apps per day were to stop growing, the Store will have some 50,000 apps by February of next year. Again, this is for the Windows 8 OS and not the mobile Windows Phone 8 OS.
Unfortunately, MetroStore Scanner doesn’t offer a breakdown of x86 vs. ARM apps, but as far as web traffic goes, the Windows 8 RT platform isn’t doing too hot.

at last i found that a simple solution for that . Just open you Task Manager > Processes in this position just try to find a process like reminder.exe or random.exe like this files just remove them from the service and delete them from your computer then it will fine.

Google extends free phone calls via Gmail through 2013

Google Voice is one of our favorite services, but it hasn't been leveraged nearly enough by Google. Luckily, a fragment of the service lives in Gmail, which allows users to make phone calls via Google Talk, and Google's offer of free phone calls through the service has been extended through 2013. The announcement was made through Google's Gmail Blog, and said:

Many of you call phones from Gmail to easily connect with friends and family. If you’re in the US and Canada, you’ll continue to be able to make free domestic calls through 2013. Plus, in most countries, you can still call the rest of the world from Gmail at insanely low rates

 

 

What the blog post doesn't mention is that some of the "insanely low rates" for calls to the rest of the world have gotten a bit more expensive. We can't speak to all of the country rates, but the rates for calling Jamaica have certainly gone up recently, and earlier in the year there were reports of rate hikes for calls to Pakistan and other countries around the world. Maybe that's how Google can afford to keep calls to the US and Canada free through Gmail.

All sounds good and I actually found a link to download the latest MapSource from Garmin’s official website. When I tried to install, I got the error message:

It seems like the file that I downloaded is an update and not the full installation setup. Luckily there is a trick on how to install MapSource without having the original installation CD.

1. Download the latest MapSource from Garmin.

2. When finished downloading, if you use archiving software such as 7-Zip, WinRAR or PowerArchiver, you can right click on the file that you downloaded and extract. If you’re unsure, you can use Universal Extractor to extract the MapSource installation file.

The extracted files can also be found in the Windows Temp folder if you know how to get there because some folders in the Temp path are hidden. Run the installer and when you see the Welcome screen go to the Temp folder. Look for a folder with 7zxxx.tmp (the x’s are random characters) for a name which contains a file called MSmain.msi inside with several other files. Copy that whole folder to your chosen location.

3. Open the extracted MapSource folder . You should see a number of files and folders. Now run MSmain.msi first, wait for it to complete (there will be no windows to click on) and then run Setup.exe. Follow the instructions to complete the installation.

If you do not have any maps installed for MapSource, you might see an error window that says “MapSource could not find any installed MapSource map products. Please install one or more MapSource map products and start MapSource again”. There are some maps for MapSource that cost money and some free.

Allwinner announces the quad-core A31 and dual-core A20 chipsets with Cortex-A7 CPUs

Chinese mobile chip manufacturer Allwinner has announced two new chips – the quad-core A31 and the dual-core A20. The chips are designed to be the heart of upcoming tablets, media PCs and set top boxes.

Both chips are using ARM Cortex-A7 processors and feature a significant boost in performance and graphics muscle, compared to the Cortex-A8 that powered the company’s current bestseller chip – the Allwinner A10.


Back to the new chips at hand, the Allwinner A20 is the more value oriented chip boasting a dual-core Cortex-A7 CPU with 512KB of L2 cache and 128KB of L1 cache. There’s a Mali 400 GPU on board supporting up to 2160p HD video playback. Additionally, the chip is backward compatible with the
Allwinner A10 on pin-to-pin basis, meaning device manufacturers can upgrade their existing devices with the new chip without too much hustle.

The beefier quad-core Allwinner A31 sports 1MB of L2 and 256KB of L1 cache. The PowerVR SGX 544 is in charge in the graphics supporting 4K ultra HD video decoding.

Allwinner is leading the chip shipments in mainland China for 2012, supplying 22 million out of the 60 million chipsets powering the various super affordable tablets and low-power devices.

Mushkin unveils 480GB mSATA SSD for ultrabooks, priced at $500

With the advents of thin and light notebooks we've also seen flash memory replace traditional hard disk drives for storage. For all the advantges this presents -- no moving parts, thinner designs, faster performance -- it often means higher price tags and less storage capacity. It'll take a while for this to change but Mushkin is taking a step in the right direction with what they claim is the "world's first" 480GB mSATA SSD.
The Atlas mSATA is based on a SandForce SF-2281 controller and features everything you'd expect from a modern SSD, including TRIM support, ECC, support for the 6Gbps SATA III interface and an upgradeable firmware. In terms of performance you're looking at up to 540MB/s sequential read speeds and up to 425MB/s sequential write speeds, with 78K random read IOPS and 28K random write IOPS.

The tiny drive is expected to ship in mid-January 2013 with an MSRP of $500 and a 3-year limited warranty. Anandtech notes that's around $50-$150 pricier than comparable 480GB SF-2281 units in the 2.5" form factor. Still, at around a $1 per gigabyte for such a speedy and small drive the Atlas isn't a bad deal -- the price might still drop a bit more for manufacturers wanting to ship one inside an Ultrabook.
Despite Mushkin's claims of breaking the 256GB mSATA barrier, it should be noted that OWC actually beat them to the punch with the 480GB Aura Pro, which is based on the same SF-2281 controller but priced $80 higher. Apple also offers an upgrade to 512GB SSD storage for the MacBook Air, although in that case NAND is soldered directly onto the logic board (not mSATA) and costs $500 when upgrading from 256GB.

Emirates Airline Soars With New Windows 8 Business Application and HP Tablet Experience

Emirates, one of the fastest-growing airlines in the world, announced today at the Windows 8 launch event in Dubai the development of a line-of-business application for Windows 8 called Knowledge Driven Inflight Service (KIS). An in-flight communication and customer relationship management device first introduced by Emirates for its pursers in 2004, the KIS application will now run on the soon-to-be-launched HP ElitePad 900 business tablets and will enable Emirates to continue to deliver extraordinary customer service and experiences.

“At Emirates, we strive to deliver the world’s best in-flight experience,” said Kevin Griffiths, senior vice president, Cabin Crew at Emirates. “We constantly invest in the best aircraft, products and service. To support our crew, we have created an application on Windows 8 that delivers a unique, personalized experience with the necessary information for our cabin crew to better serve the needs of customers. The Windows 8 platform running on HP ElitePad 900 devices gave us this option, allowing us to create the KIS app that enables our crew to offer an experience not available on other airlines.”

Pursers on the flight use the KIS application to brief the cabin crew before every flight and understand how to best meet the personal preferences and needs of passengers. The crew can also use the application to easily conduct in-flight upgrades to business class or first class for Emirates Skywards members, as well as customer feedback that is immediately routed to headquarters upon landing.

As the first global customer of the HP ElitePad 900, Emirates is creating a new KIS tablet that is light, attractive and has a long battery life, ideal for nonstop flights. The device, announced by HP in October and available to customers in January 2013, is built specifically for business users, offering Windows 8 optimization and a beautiful lightweight design. Combined with Windows 8’s touch-optimized user interface, which quickly shows the most important information via Live Tiles, the crew can spend more time interacting with customers in a unique and efficient way.

Microsoft Hardware Gets ‘Skype-Certified’ Stamp

Microsoft Hardware products will soon ship with a bright blue stamp on the box: “Skype Certified.”

Skype has certified all Microsoft HD webcams and USB Microsoft headsets, the company announced today in a blog post.That seal of approval – granted after months of testing by engineers at Skype – means users are guaranteed to have an optimal Skype experience, including HD quality video calls.

The announcement is a milestone for Skype’s millions of monthly connected users and a big step in its integration into the Microsoft family, said Ed Botterill, head of Skype Certification.

“The essence of certification is for Skype to guide its users to the best hardware that will produce the best Skype experiences,” he said. “This is the first time we’ve been able to guide them to such a big hardware player in Microsoft, whose webcams and headsets will improve the Skype experience for the majority of our user base.”

The newly certified hardware marks the beginning of a partnership to “push the envelope of great hardware experiences,” he said.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Hardware is looking forward to getting its products exposure to millions of Skype customers via the online Skype store, said Kurt Wrisley, senior program manager with Microsoft Hardware. “Getting their endorsement on your box is huge,” he said. With users making 300 billion minutes of calls annually, Skype is a certified online powerhouse; telling Skype users they’ll get a great experience with Microsoft’s own hardware is a huge win for the company, he said.

Botterill describes Skype’s certification team as a bunch of passionate audio-visual engineers, and in Microsoft Hardware they found kindred spirits. One of them was Andrew Juenger, a senior design verification engineer for Microsoft Hardware who helped run the initial tests of the webcams and headsets. Like their counterparts at Skype, Juenger and his colleagues spend their workdays putting products through stringent testing to ensure customers get a quality experience. Even the inanimate team members get in on the action; Juenger highlighted the role of “Hank,” a green-tinted head and torso simulator (HATS). Hank sits in a sound chamber, dons a headset, and “answers” a Skype call. Engineers then run an audio analysis of the call.

As a scientist, Juenger talks passionately about audio fidelity and video acuity. But he said the core of his work is about delivering users a great experience. He noted that Skype certification means users of Microsoft’s webcams will be able to make HD calls enabled with the Skype client – something that’s possible only with the Skype-certified stamp. “At the end of the day, all the work is about ensuring a good user experience on Microsoft’s products,” he said.

That passion around delivering quality experiences will drive both Microsoft Hardware and Skype moving forward, Botterill said.

“We have the opportunity to put together the world’s biggest video calling platform with Skype together with industry leaders in Microsoft who have really come on strong in the headset and webcam market,” he said. “Now that we’re part of the same company, that’s where we really should be able to define future products and quality levels.”
