2012 was clearly not a good year for
BlackBerry manufacturer
Research In Motion. RIM had been reeling under pressure from competitors, mainly
Android
smartphones, for the past few years. But that hasn't stopped them from
showing off the spanking new BlackBerry 10 (BB10) OS. This seems to be a
big step forward compared to its predecessor — because of the nicer
interface, intelligent touch keyboard, and camera app that lets you
do a lot more,
and in a better way than anything seen earlier on a BB. The Canadian
company is also preparing the Z10, which will be the first BlackBerry
smartphone based on BB10. It has been a secret thus far, but a few
specifications of the Z10 have been leaked online by
BBin.in — and it does look good. Here is what we have as of now about the Z10:
- BlackBerry 10 OS.
- HSPA+
/ UMTS (850, 900, 1700, 1900, 2100 MHz); GSM/GPRS (850, 900, 1800 MHz);
LTE Bands 2, 4, 5, 13, 17 (700, 850, 1700, 1900 MHz).
- Dual-core 1.5 GHz TI OMAP 4470 (Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8960 for US and Canada).
- 4.2", 1280x768 (356 PPI) screen with 24-bit colours and a 15:9 aspect ratio.
- 8 megapixel autofocus rear camera with flash and 1080p recording, 2 megapixel front facing camera.
- 2 GB RAM, 16/32 GB internal storage, microSD card slot.
- Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 LE, micro-USB, micro-HDMI.
- GPS with A-GPS.
- Sensors: Ambient light, Accelerometer, Magnetometer, Gyroscope, Face Detect for phone calls.
- 1800 mAh removable battery.
As per BB.in, the CPU is yet to be confirmed. The specifications appear similar to what we can expect in a mid- to high-end
Android
phone, although we can expect better performance since it is the launch
vehicle for BB10 — and will therefore be well-optimised for the new OS
that it'll come installed with.
Will the Z10 and BB10 be saviours
for a company in the doldrums? We won't have to wait long to know,
because the BlackBerry 10 will be launched in just over five weeks from
now (on the 30th of January). It is very likely that the company will
launch the Z10 along with the OS.
